Despite the fact that important players went down with injuries during the season, the 2007 Houston Texans (8-8) had their best season ever. sage rosenfels Third-year coach Gary Kubiak (14-18) expects to notch a winning record in 2008.

Offense

In 2007, his first season, QB Matt Schaub (289 ATT, 192 COMP, 2,241 YDS, 9 TDs, 9 INT) missed or left nine games due to injury. His backup, Sage Rosenfels (240 ATT, 154 COMP, 1,684 YDS, 15 TDs, 12 INT), came in and was an on-target performer. Still, look for Schaub to start again. The pass catching squad has talent and depth, with Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter being the go-to guys. Andre Davis, who averaged 17.7 YPC, is another player with capable hands. The line, which was overall sound in 2007, has been upgraded through the 2008 draft and the addition of free agents. RB Ahman Green will lead the ground game as long as he remains healthy.

Defense

The D-line, led by Mario Williams and his 14 sacks, is tough. Pro Bowl LB Demeco Ryans recorded 128 tackles. Still, some depth in the linebacking squad would be very helpful. Corner Dunta Robinson, a star of the secondary, is rehabbing a torn ACL. Corner Fred Bennet (3 INT), who has been prone to injury, is a no-nonsense tackler. The Houston secondary lacks depth.

Special Teams

Return specialist Andre Davis is capable of the big play at any time. His quickness and acceleration are tops. Placekicker Kris Brown was good on 25 of 29 field-goal attempts. Although inconsistent, punter Matt Turk was able to put balls inside the 20-yard line.

Overview

The Houston Texans have improved but in the tough AFC South, it’s doubtful they’ve improved enough to do better than a fourth-place finish. However, this looks to be the best Houston Texan team to date, and with a few more seasons of growth, they could top their division.
