The Arizona Cardinals (8-8) should be contenders this season. Last season was their best in five years. This year, they should do even better. At least on paper it looks that way.
Offense
In his third season, QB Matt Leinart (112 ATT, 60 COMP, 647 YDS, 2 TD, 4 INT) will be charged with leading this team to a winning season. The O-line, which was good last season, shows more depth in 2008. The running game is good with Edgerrin James (324 ATT, 1,222 YDS, 3.8 AVG, 7 TD) and J.J. Arrington (26 ATT, 76 YDS, 3.0 AVG, 0 TDs) leading the way. The receivers are simply some of the best around, featuring premium pass catchers Larry Fitzgerald> (100 REC, 1,4009 YDS, 14.1 AVG, 10 TDs) and Anquan Boldin (71 REC, 853 YDS, 12.0 AVG, 9 TDs).
Defense
Last season, the defense was ranked 28th against the air game. The team’s corners have been upgraded. The linebacking unit, the best part of the defense, features Gerald Hayes (98 tackles). The Cardinals’ 36 sacks were average. DT Darnell Dockett (9 sacks) needs help from his teammates. The “D” was rated ninth versus the run.
Special Teams
The return game found a bright spot in Steve Breaston. Look for him to contribute more in 2008. Punting and kicking are problematic. Kicker Neil Rackers, who has been hit-and-miss, returns, while veteran Dirk Johnson will punt.
Overview
Head coach Ken Whisenhunt (8-8) had a decent rookie season in 2007. One thing everybody learned about Whisenhunt was that he was willing to take risks. He went for it on fourth down 14 times and made the first down a dozen. Whisenhunt, who did have problems with play calling and clock management, proved to be the real thing. With his tough, disciplined approach, this team could be a contender for a wild card spot.
