The last time the Cincinnati Bengals, who were 7-9 last season, made it to the playoffs, it was 2005 when the club was 11-5. Since that time, the Bengals have put good offenses on the field, but their defensive play has been inconsistent.

If the defense can step up, the fortunes of this team will improve.

Offense

QB Carson Palmer, who threw 26 touchdowns and 20 interceptions last season, is considered to be one of the finest around. He’s surrounded by a top O-line, which last season gave up just 17 sacks. The pass catchers, which include T.J. Houshmandzadeh (112 REC, 1,143 YDS, 10.2 AVG, 12 TDs) and Chad Johnson (93 REC, 1,440 YDS, 15.5 AVG, 8 TDs), are superior. RB Rudi Johnson (170 ATT, 497 YDS, 2.9 AVG, 3 TDs) was hampered by a hamstring in 2007. With good health he’ll have his share of scores and more than 1,000 yards on the ground. The offensive line allowed just 17 sacks; it returns solid starters who have worked to become fitter and stronger in 2008.

Defense

The Bengal defense was in the bottom quarter of the league last year. The drafting of defensive tackles James Shirley and Pat Sims has improved the D-line. Additionally, rookie LB Keith Rivers will help that middle unit. Dhani Jones (89 tackles) will anchor the linebackers. There is talent in the inexperienced secondary.

Special Teams

In 2007, the Bengals finished last on punt returns. Placekicker Shayne Graham is accurate and punter Kyle Larson knows how to place the ball where he wants it.

Overview

This Cincinnati team has a shot at second- or even first-place. The clubs in the AFC North are closely matched. If it’s a shootout, Palmer is a great arm to have on your side. But the defense is still questionable.
