The 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers, under the guidance of first-time coach Mike Tomlin, went 10-6, and found their way back to the post-season after missing the playoffs in 2006. They did it by winning their division.
This season, they may not even make it to the playoffs.
Offense
For the Steelers, 2007 was the year of the ground attack as running back Willie Parker torn up the league, rushing for 1,316 yards, and Najeh Davenport offered support with 499 rushing yards. In 2007, the Steelers did not have to have a first-rate passing game because they fielded the third most productive ground game in the league. This season, rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall will contribute immediately. QB Ben Roethlisberger, who threw for 3,154 yards and 32 scores with 11 picks, was at the top of his games despite the fact that his offensive line, which gave up 47 sacks, was not.
Defense
The Steelers’ “D” gave up just 269 points in 2007, which was second in the NFL. They finished third in total yards allowed. One problem is the loss of free agent Pro Bowl TE Alan Faneca, who signed with the Jets. The linebacking unit is solid, but the secondary has many questions.
Special Teams
Mewelde Moore is the club’s new punt return man; it’s hoped he’ll help upgrade that aspect of their game. Additions to the punt and kickoff coverage squads will hopefully aid in improving those weak units. Placekicker Jeff Reed is accurate.
Overview
After winning the Super Bowl in 2005, the Steelers did not make it into the post-season in 2006. Pittsburgh plays one of the toughest schedules in the NFL. It will not be an easy season. Especially with a vastly improved Browns team at their heels.
