A batsman is said to be caught out if the ball he hits is caught by a fielder. This results in the dismissal of the batsman. In order for a batsman to be ruled caught out the catch needs to be taken before it comes in contact with the ground and only if it hits the bat or the gloved hand of the batsman that held the bat. The batsman is declared not out if the fielder drops the ball or catches the ball beyond the boundary of play. A catch caught by the wicketkeeper is called caught behind and a catch caught by the bowler is called caught and bowled.
