A pavilion is a building complex that houses the dressing rooms of the players and where the members of the club are seated. This grandstand is usually located within the cricket grounds. Designs of each pavilion vary from modest buildings to large imposing infrastructure.

Historic Pavilion Structure

There are a number of historic pavilions located in various nations where the sport cricket is famous. In London, the typical designs are the Victorian architectural style. They are usually seen on famous English grounds, such as the Lord’s Cricket Ground and The Oval. Another notable pavilion was designed by Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, a leading Victorian architect that designed the University Parks at Oxford. In Australia, the Sydney Cricket Ground is also a noteworthy historic pavilion.

Modern Pavilion Structure

As the year progresses, so does the design on the pavilion. Their structures are more modern and distinctive. The most distinguished modern pavilion is the Kensington Oval in Barbados. This building was named after Sir Garfield Sobers. The Rose Bowl in England and the Brabourne Stadium in India are other modern pavilions that are popular because of its unique structure.

Designing Pavilion

Pavilions that are constructed primarily for cricket require considerable skills, particularly when it comes to their design and specification. There are three essential points that must be taken into account when designing a pavilion for cricket. These are:

  • Site Planning – location is veryimportant prior to the constructionof the pavilion. The shape and itscontours must be taken intoconsideration, particularly itsother essential parts includingsufficient space for futureexpansion, adequate parking areas, access for emergency vehicles, andthe like.
  • Accommodation – the type ofaccommodation will depend on thepurpose of the pavilion. Generalaccommodations include changingrooms, toilets, showers, officials’accommodation, social area, entrancelobby, cleaner’s cupboard, or astore. If the club owner plans toincrease the potential use of thefacility, recreational elements canbe added.
  • Pavilion Planning – To ensure thesuccessful design of the structure, careful planning of itsaccommodation is very important. There are certain considerationsthat should be given such as thelength of corridors, changing areas, circulation routes, convenientaccess to pitches, and thesatisfactory viewing area of theclub members.
