A Dot Ball refers to a delivery bowled with no runs scored. The reason why it is called a dot ball is that in the scorebook if a batsman did not score any runs, it is recorded with a single dot, hence, the name dot ball. In the sport, the aim of each team is to make as many runs as possible to increase their chances of winning. The more runs you scored, the higher your team score gets. With a batsman experiencing no runs, it limits the opportunity of the batting team to escalate their score by gaining more runs.
Reasons for Dot Ball
A batsman earning a dot ball has many reasons. One of its many causes is if the batsman was unable to make a run during the delivery bowl, thus preventing their team from earning a score. The reason for it could be that the batsman might have difficulty making the run. Another reason could be if the batsman does not make any attempt to score any runs due to having the ball settled at the hands of either the wicket-keeper or the bowler. Getting a dot ball in the scorecard is the result of experiencing a dead ball.
How a Dead Ball Can Lead to Dot Ball?
A dead ball is a state of play where the player was not able to perform its role during the game, either the batsman was unable to score runs, or the fielders were not able to get the batsman out. Scoring a run is only able during the live state, wherein the batsman was able to make a run and score, and at the same time get out without getting dismissed. Therefore, if the batsman is unable to play during the live state, then the dead ball can lead to a dot ball.
Avoiding Dot Ball
To avoid dot ball, it is very important that the batsman is well-prepared. The batsman needs to have a presence of mind to make a proper hit allowing him to score runs. It is imperative that the batsman does not get distracted and stay focus on the pitcher’s delivery bowl. Otherwise, the batsman might not be able to gain enough momentum to hit the ball that lets him make as many runs as he can and earn more scores.
