Caught and Bowled refers to the circumstances when the batsman is dismissed because his ball was caught by the bowler itself. The term caught refers to the batsman being dismissed during the game because a fielder was able to catch the ball in the field without bouncing. In fact, caught is a common dismissal among batsman. For the term bowled it refers the batsman being caught by a particular bowler.
Caught and Bowled Explained
A batsman can get dismissed for several reasons. The dismissal can either be credited to the bowler through clean bowled, hit-wicket stumped, and leg before wicket, while the other reason is being caught by the fielder, hence the batsman is taken out of the game. The term caught and bowled is used when the catch was done by the bowler. Keep in mind that this is different from the dismissal bowled. Bowled refers to the dismissal of the batsman when the delivery manages to hit the stumps and the bails were removed.
Avoiding Caught and Bowled
There are a several ways a batsman can avoid getting caught and bowled. These ways are as follows: the batsman did not hit the ball, the ball manage to hit the field before it was caught by the bowler or the fielder, the ball manages to land beyond the boundary, a dead ball, and the bowler or the fielder was not able to control the ball. Another way of avoiding caught and bowled is when the ball manages to get a hit on the helmet of the bowler or the fielder before getting caught.
When the Batsman is Caught and Bowled?
If the bowler catches the ball the batsman hit he will be given credit with the wicket of the batsman. On the other hand, if a fielder catches the ball, it is called caught behind and although the fielder gets credit for the dismissal of the batsman, the bowler will be credited with the batsman’s wicket as well. Once the batsman is caught, they have the option to appeal to the umpire, especially when the ball bounces off at the batsman's foot or brushes the edge of the bat without hitting it. However, if the catch is obvious, the batsman often acknowledges the dismissal.
