Bowled Around His Legs refers to the dismissal of a batsman that was bowled during delivery. This usually happens when the ball passes on the leg side of the body of the player. During delivery, when the ball is aimed outside the leg stump, it often leads the ball behind the batsman, thus hitting the stumps. When this occurs, the batsman is then said to have been “bowled around his legs.”
What Leads to Bowled Around His Legs?
This situation usually takes place during a leg break. It is a form of delivery that results in a right-handed leg-spin bowler. As the ball is released, the wrist of the bowler rotates to the left, while the ring finger flicks the ball. This leads to the ball having an anti-clockwise spin. Once the ball bounces on the pitch, it will cause it to spin and head towards the left side of the bowler or the right side of the batsman point of view. This type of delivery is considered to be one of the most difficult spin deliveries. This is because the delivery of the ball moves away from the batsman’s body. So if the batsman miscalculates the delivery of the ball, this results in bowled around his legs.
How to Avoid Bowled Around His Legs?
If the batsman is left-handed, it is often easy to face leg break deliveries as the ball moves towards the body of the batter. This is due to having the ball being in the direct path where the batsman's legs are, making it easier to hit the ball. Leg break deliveries are often a challenge for the bowler if their purpose is to get the batsman out bowled or bowled around his legs. However, if the batsman is right-handed, it takes a discerning eye and quick reflexes to outmaneuver such delivery and not be out bowled. Right-handed batsman needs to be careful not to be bowled around his legs otherwise, they might get dismissed during the play. Often times bowlers that want the upper hand uses this kind of technique to out bowled its opposing batsman.
