Why Mzansi Super League & its History?

This is the first ever season of his South African T20 competition, which is why there isn’t much history to talk about. However, it must be said that even before it’s gotten off the ground there have been a lot of things that have happened in the background.

For one, this South African T20 competition was expected to be called the Global Destination League T20 when it was about to be launched with much fanfare in 2017. The only problem was that the CSA did not get any broadcaster on board for the price they wanted and as a result, the tournament had to be shelved weeks before it was to begin. The lofty plans around it were also put to bed and this season, a watered-down version of the original league has gotten a go-ahead.

This Mzansi Super League will have six teams and much like most other tournaments in the world, like the PSL and APL and the others, will have a round-robin competition followed by a knock-out stage in the tournament. The first ever season will be played from November 16, 2018.

Mzansi means South Africa, a way of ensuring the tournament will be African in nature.

Current Mzansi Super League Format & Schedule

As mentioned above, six teams will take part in this opening season of the Mzansi Super League. These six teams are as follows:

  • Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
  • Tshwane Spartans
  • Jozi Stars
  • Durban Heat
  • Cape Town Blitz
  • Paarl Rocks

Each of these six teams will play each other twice, on a home and away basis, to make it 30 matches during the league stage of the competition. This will be followed by the knock-out stage in which the top three sides will qualify - the top team will directly make the final while teams ranked second and third will feature in the semis.

A total of 32 matches will be played this year as a result and the bigger grounds like Kingsmead in Durban or the New Wanderers in Johannesburg will be used for the matches.

Mzansi Super League Schedule for 2018:
