Sir George Edmond Brackenbury Abell was born in Worcester on 22nd June 1904 and died in Ramsbury, Wiltshire on 11th January 1989. He played English country cricket for Worcestershire, Oxford University and also for Europeans, the Punjab Governor’s XI and India. He was a right handed batsman as well as wicket-keeper other than being a captain.

Abell worked in the Indian Civil Service before India became independent. He was a private secretary to Lord Wavell and Lord Mountbatten. After his return to the United Kingdom, he was the First Civil Service Commissioner and afterwards the director of the Bank of England.

Abell’s first class debut in cricket was at Worcester in August 1923. He played against Essex for Worcestershire. In 1924, he played 12 matches during which he held 12 catches and 2 stumpings. In the next year, he passed five hundred runs once in his lifetime. The 1926 to 1928 season was not a fruitful period for Abell. In 31 innings, he managed a highest score of fifty, however picked up victims behind the stumps.

From 1928-29 to 1934-35, he played first-class cricket in India like for the Europeans and the Punjab Governor’s XI. In 1934-35, he scored 210 runs for Northern India against Army in the first Ranji Trophy. This was the first double century in the competition and the highest score even made by Abell. From 1935 onwards, Abell played in England for Worcestershire. In his last first-class game, he was the skipper of Northern India against Southern Punjab in the 1941-42 Ranji Trophy.

Abell played 75 matches in first class cricket during which he scored 2,674 runs at an average of 24.75. He made 4 centuries and 8 half-centuries. In his career, he took 97 catches and 35 stumpings.
