Born on 14th September, 1966, Mohammad Aamer Sohail Ali was a former cricket player for Pakistan. Sohail spent his early childhood in Lahore, also in Pakistan. Sohail was selected for playing first-class cricket in 1983. He played as a left-handed batsman.

Sohail played 195 first-class matches and 261 List A Limited Overs matches. He made it to the national team in 1990 against Sri Lanka for an international match. Sohail has played in 47 test matches and 156 ODIs (One Day Internationals). His batting average stood at 35.28 for tests and 31.86 for ODI matches.

Besides being an important member of the batting squad for his team, Sohail was also a good spinner. Sohail has recorded a bowling average of 41.96 for tests and 43.56 for ODI matches. Sohail has played for Pakistan in several important matches including the Cricket World Cup in 1990. Pakistan emerged as the world champion at the tournament.

In 1996, Sohail was named the captain for Pakistan. Under his captaincy, Pakistan won a test match against South Africa in 1998. This feat made him the first Pakistani captain to have been able to do so. Pakistan went into 22 ODI matches under his captaincy and emerged victorious in 9 of them. He retired as the captain of the team in 1998.

The years after 1992 saw Sohail getting involved in various on-field controversies. In 1990, Sohail again made it to the media pages because of a match-fixing scandal. The media charges against him made him to retire from all forms of cricket in 2001. After retirement, till 2004, Sohail was the selector for the Pakistan national cricket team. He is currently working as a broadcaster for cricket matches.
