Graeme Wood
Graeme Malcom Wood was born in Western Australia and had played for the Australian national cricket team. Wood had made his debut with Test cricket in 1978 against India. He was a left-handed batsman and a right-handed medium pacer for the team.
Wood had toured with the Australian cricket squad to West Indies in 1978 and scored 4 half centuries. He contributed a total of 474 runs to his career at an average of 47.40. This excelled score helped him retain his place within the team until mid-1980s. But in 1985, Wood was dropped off from the national team.
While not playing internationally, Wood played first-class cricket for Western Australia. Wood has made a total of 13,353 runs with a batting average of 39.97 for first class cricket. Contributing to this high score were his 35 centuries and 61 half-centuries. His performance at domestic cricket earned him a call back to the national squad in 1988-89. Wood scored a century in his first test against West Indies and a 42 in his second. The Australian selectors seem to find a pattern in his performance and he was recalled in the team whenever Australia was expecting a clash with the West Indies.
As a captain Australia, Wood led the team to 3 Sheffield Shield victories. Wood retired shortly after 1989. Many Australian cricketers namely Tim Zoehrer, Chris Matthews, Justin Langer have admitted to be inspired by Wood’s performance and his career.
