Shivlal Yadav was an offspinner who was bold enough to flight the ball. He has tremendous stamina for the game but was never a big turner of the ball. He debuted in Test matches against Australia in 1979. In the 5 Tests that he played, he took 24 wickets and due to his success, Venkataraghavan was excluded. In the early 80s, the Indian cricket team had a spin trio of Doshi, Shastri and Yadav.

In 1983-84, the West Indies toured India and Yadav regained his place in the team. In the 1st innings of the 4th Test at Mumbai, he took 5 wickets for 131 runs. When India played against England in 1984-85, he was overshadowed by L Sivaramakrishnan. In 1985-86, during the India Australia series, he played 3 Test matches and picked up 15 wickets. In the last match of Sydney, he picked up 8 wickets in the match and almost piloted India to victory.

Shivlal Yadav played in 35 Test matches in which he bowled 8360 deliveries and conceded 3580 runs while taking 102 wickets. His bowling strike rate was 81.9, economy rate was 2.56 and bowling average was 35.09. He scored 403 runs with 43 as his highest score.
