Johan van der Wath is a powerful hitting middle order batsman as well as a lively pace bowler. In this way, he has developed into a multi-talented allrounder. In the ICL, he is a member of Mumbai Champs.
In 2005, he was briefly involved with Sussex. Then, he became a member of South Africa A side and toured Sri Lanka as well as played against New Zealand A. In 2006, he played for Eagles in domestic cricket and had an impressive performance. In the Standard Bank Cup final, he was the Man of the Match. In the 2005-06 VB series, when Jacques Kallis was sent home, Johan received his first international call. In this tournament, he claimed 10 wickets. Although, he scored a debut duck, he compensated this in the final match by scoring an unbeaten 37 inclusive of 4 sixers. He was called in the South Africa squad for the Twenty20 World Championship.
