In 2001, when Mohammad Sharif was 17 years old, he was chosen in the national side due to good display in the National League. He appeared genuinely quick, lanky and tall. He was successful in moving the ball in both directions and could bowl reverse swing. In the lower order, he served as a handy hard hitting batsman. As a fielder, he appeared brisk.

Sharif had a reasonable beginning to his international career. However, in 2002, he lost his place and after the 2003 World Cup he had an irritating groin injury. He had to undergo a series of operations in India and Australia. About 4 years after his previous appearance for the national side, when he was selected for the tour of Zimbabwe, he returned to the national side. In 2008, he joined the rebel ICL (Dhaka Warriors) and almost ended his international career. The Bangladesh Cricket Board issued a 10 year ban on him.
