Salil Ankola was a handsome, athletic, and tall fast-bowler who played for India between 1989 and 1997. The other teams for which he played included Mumbai and Maharashtra. He played with the right hand.

Salil Ankola made his debut in international cricket in the Test match held from 15th of November, 1989 at ‘National Stadium, Karachi’ against Pakistan. This was the only test match played by him. ‘Draw’ was the outcome. In the first innings, Salil could pick up a crucial wicket, i.e. of Saleem Malik. He picked up the wicket of Saleem Yousuf in the second innings. As far as ODIs are concerned, Salil played against Pakistan at ‘Gujranwala’ on 18th of December, 1989. He picked up 2 wickets in that match. However, he could play the next Test Match as injuries befriended him at that juncture. In the year 1990, Frank Tyson aided him on having remodeled his approach towards wicket. This made him return with less pace, shorter run; but, at the same time, much enhanced control. The year 1993 marked his return in ODIs but he couldn’t stay in the team for long due to poor fielding. Salil played in a tournament prior to being dropped for 1996 World Cup.
