William Copson
William Henry Copson was a distinguished English cricketer renowned for his prowess as an all-rounder. His remarkable career spanned from 1932 to 1950, primarily representing Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Copson was not just a key player for his club, but he also made significant contributions to the England National Cricket Team from 1939 to 1947.
Career
Born on 27 April 1908 in Stonebroom, Derbyshire, Copson's journey into cricket was serendipitous. Originally a miner with no initial passion for the sport, he was encouraged by fellow miners to join local matches during a strike in 1926. His raw talent quickly shone through, and by 1927 he was playing in the Derbyshire League, leading to his selection for the county team in 1932.Copson made his first-class debut against Surrey and went on to have a stellar career, including a memorable Championship season in 1936. He debuted for the national team on 24 June 1939 against the West Indies National Cricket Team, with his final test appearance occurring in 1947 against South Africa National Cricket Team. Over his career, he claimed over 1,000 wickets for Derbyshire, showcasing his exceptional skill as a right-arm fast medium bowler.
