Cape Cobras brought themselves back into contention for a semi-final place in the 2014 Champions League T20 tournament on Friday, with their Super Over victory over the Barbados Tridents, when they had appeared to be on the brink of elimination.
Their chance of making it through to the knockout stages are however, still slim at best.
On Sunday they face the Kings XI Punjab in their fourth and final Group B qualifying fixture at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh.
By the time they take the field in what is the late match on Sunday, they could already be eliminated, dependant on the outcome of the early game at the same venue, when the Barbados Tridents face the Hobart Hurricanes.
Cobras opponents on Sunday, the Kings XI Punjab, have already secured their place in the last four, having a perfect 100% winning record from their first three fixtures in Group B. The latest of which was an overwhelming win against the Northern Knights of New Zealand, who after performing so heroically in the qualifying and early stages of the main draw, and have a touch of a reality in their last two outings, and been put firmly in their place.
Kings XI made sure of their semi-final place with a 120 run margin against the Kiwis, the biggest margin of victory in six seasons of the CLT20. Their big hitters such as Manan Vohra, Virender Sehwag and David Miller helped to propel them to 215, with Knights leading fast bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee being plundered for 93 runs from eight overs.
Even if the Tridents upset the form book early in the day, in reality, it seems unlikely that the Cobras will unseat the Kings XI to maintain their hopes of making the semi-finals.
