Ishant Sharma came up with a stunning haul of five wickets to peg the Kochi Tuskers back in the 32nd game of the Indian Premier League for the Deccan Chargers. Chasing a paltry score of 130 for the win, the Tuskers were bowled out for 74 to give the Chargers their third win in the tournament. >
It was a two-over spell that changed everything for the Tuskers. Chasing 130, they would have been in a happy position to record their fourth win of the tournament, but Dale Steyn pegged them back a little with a wicket off the very first ball of the game. >
This was followed by Ishant Sharma taking over from the other end and making the ball talk. Parthiv Patel edged one to the wicket-keeper, Raiphi Gomez was bowled off an in-swinging, good-length delivery whereas Brad Hodge saw his stumps cartwheel – all in the same over of the game.
The carnage did not stop there. In the fourth over of the innings, and Sharma’s second, the Tuskers lost two more wickets. There was Kedar Jadhav who was caught plumb in front of the wickets and captain Mahela Jayawardene who had no clue to the one that reared up and took the edge of the batsman’s bat through to the keeper.
With six wickets lost for a mere 11 runs, the target had suddenly started looking as far as moon is from the earth and despite the lower-middle order doing its best, the side was bowled out for 74. Ravindra Jadeja and Thisara Perera scored 23 and 22 each but it was to no avail.
Earlier, the Chargers ran the risk of falling apart in the same manner as the Kochi Tuskers did. They lost their first three wickets for 20 and would have lost a fourth one of their captain Sangakkara, had the umpire not called it a no-ball. It was a superb piece of bowling as the ball swung around and got the batsman being bowled before the no-ball was called.
Sangakkara were on to score one of the more sublime innings of 65 that came off 47 balls and had ten hits to the fence. While still showing signs of being out of form, Cameron White did his best to assist his captain with a 34-ball 31 but given that it was the only other knock in double-figures for the side, it was a job well-done.
Ishant Sharma was declared the man of the match for his superb spell of bowling.
