Kings XI Punjab ride of Marsh knock to beat Royals

It was the same ground on which the Kings XI Punjab had chased down 189 against the Chennai Super Kings.

It was the same ground on which the Kings XI Punjab had chased down 189 against the Chennai Super Kings. And when they themselves got to 195 after being asked to bat first, it looked like the target was very much on for the Rajasthan Royals; a flat track with the incurrence of dew made for a potentially exciting chase.Should bat higher>

Unfortunately for the Royals, there were some bizarre decisions taken by the captain Shane Warne and to go with some poor shot-making under pressure, the Royals went down for the third game in a row. Man of the match>

Warne did not open the innings with Shane Watson. Instead, it was Rahul Dravid walking out with Swapnil Asnodkar. None of these two managed a start and were dismissed early enough. Even when Watson came in at the number three position and began timing the ball well, his flow was consistently interrupted thanks to the loss of strike to Stuart Binny. Binny was rather slow to start off the proceedings and by the time he had got his bearings right, Watson and Ross Taylor (0) had both been sent back to the pavilion.

With four wickets lost for 49 and not too many hard hitters remaining, the chase was almost off. There were a few lusty hits from the bat of Ashok Menaria, who made 34 and Abhishek Raut (25), but the asking rate had gone to outside the realms of comfortable and into the areas of impossible. In the end, Rajasthan fell short by 48 runs, a heavy defeat in this format of the game.

Earlier, the Punjab side were lucky to get away to the start that they had. Both the opening batsmen, Adam Gilchrist and Paul Valthaty were dismissed once each only for them to be rescued by no-balls and they took full toll of that. In fact, Gilchrist’s let-off was followed by a boundary while Valthaty sent two to the fence after he was given not-out.

It was in the third over of the innings that the game was totally taken away from the Royals. Valthaty launched into Siddharth Trivedi by depositing him to the fence five times in the over, including a couple of sixes before Gilly smashed 15 off the next over.

Shaun Marsh joined in the fun later and scored 71 off 42 balls as the Punjab side looked good to get to even 220. They slowed down in the last five overs, getting only 27 off them but that proved to be much more than enough.
