Australia won the toss and decided to bat first in this game after having won the ODI series. There were a couple of changes made to the Australian side, with Tim Paine coming in place of Brad Haddin and James Pattinson making his debut while resting Brett Lee. MIssed his century>

Shane Watson seemed to have continued from where he had left off in the previous game when he was quickly off the mark and running. Ricky Ponting opened the innings with him, for only the third time in his career and together the two added 110 for the first wicket in less than 12 overs. He would have got to another century in double-quick time but on 72 (40 balls), he was bowled by Abdur Razzaq.

Ponting’s 47 was curtailed soon after, while the experiment to send Steven Smith at the number four position yielded only five runs.

It was the fourth wicket stand between Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey that took the score along to where it stood in the end. Clarke made 47 and as has been the case with most of his recent innings, he was slow off the blocks. However, Hussey did not waste the opportunity to convert his start into a big century, which in the end, was helped by a 25-ball 41 from Mitchell Johnson.

Hussey’s 108 came off 91 as the Bangladeshis were left chasing leather.

Not that the Bangladeshi side gave up without a fight, like how they had in the previous two ODIs. Tamim Iqbal began well as he smashed a 19-ball 32 that included a six and six boundaries and the stand of 43 came in 4.3 overs. It was Mitchell Johnson who carved out the wicket of Iqbal, having him bowled.

That, however, was the beginning of another long stand, that between Imrul Kayes and Shahriar Nafees who picked up the gauntlet well and added 136 for the second wicket. Nafees made 60 but was slow, especially in comparison with Kayes’ 95-ball 93.

Both did fall in fairly quick succession, and by then, the asking rate had climbed to more than ten runs per over. Mahmudullah did his bit at the end but the target was too large for them to get near and ended up 66 runs short of it.
