Kolkata Knight Riders beat the Deccan Chargers by nine runs in the sixth game of the IPL this season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Deccan Chargers needed to get a required rate of more than eight from the word go, but what they got instead was a rather strange little innings from Ishank Jaggi. Jaggi was there at the crease for nine balls and he tried to get going off each of the ball he faced but could score only three. His misery was ended by Iqbal Abdullah who had him bowled. >
Dhawan, at the other end, would have wanted to go on to get a big one but he was run-out through a superb piece of fielding – a diving stop from Eoin Morgan and a throw from that position hit the stump and the batsman was run-out. Sangakkara struggled through to a 15-ball 16 and the side was 53/3 in nine overs – down and almost out.
With not too many apart from JP Duminy left with a chance to go after the target, the rest of the side collapsed without offering much. Bharath Chipli made 48 but the issue was that he took 40 balls to get there and was uncertain about his running between the wickets too.
There was some lusty hitting by Daniel Christian which got him 25 off 13, but Kolkata managed to win on a canter in the end. >
Kolkata Knight Riders made the decision to bat first in the sixth game of the Indian Premier League 2011 after they had won the toss. The pitch at the Eden Gardens, where the game was being played usually helps the slower bowler but the decision to bat first came handy as the track turned and bounced for the spinners and made life difficult after the initial shine had worn off.
The openers, Jacques Kallis and Manvinder Bisla had had a half-century stand in the previous game as well, and they continued their good partnership with another 50 added for the first wicket. The run-rate was a tad slower at six per over but the good foundation was laid for the latter batsmen.
Gautam Gambhir did not make the same mistake as the previous game and batted at the number three position. Kallis got to his half century as Gambhir also tried to get the acceleration going. However, the issue was that the Chargers had both, Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha, both of who were able to get the ball to turn a mile and then there were some others which kept low.
It was the bowling of JP Duminy that was taken apart, as he was hit for three sixes in the two overs he bowled – conceding 23 in those two.
In the end, there were a couple of cameos, with Manoj Tiwary getting to a 21-ball 30 while Yusuf Pathan was the last man out for 22 (15 balls). Kolkata ended on 163/4 in 20 overs, a potentially match-winning score.
