MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar added 46 runs before Sehwag (35) was out caught by Matt Prior off Tim Bresnan. Tendulkar, on the other end started off slowly but later gathered momentum to bring up his fifth World Cup hundred. Scored his 47th century>

Tendulkar hit 120 runs from just 115 balls with 10 fours and five sixes. Tendulkar added 134 runs with Gautam Gambhir (51) and then raised 56 runs with Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj Singh seemed to have got into form with an aggressive 58 runs from 50 balls and hit nine fours. He raised 69 runs for the fourth wicket with MS Dhoni (31). Once Yuvraj and Dhoni were removed, England managed to run through the rest of the batting order to dismiss India for 338 runs. India lost their last five wickets for the addition of just 11 runs. Tim Bresnan took a career-best 5/48, including three wickets in an over.

England began their chase emphatically with Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss adding 68 runs. After Pietersen (31) was dismissed by Munaf Patel, Strauss added 43 runs for the second wicket with Jonathan Trott (16). India had managed to defeat Australia in the warm-up game at the same ground and England looked good to be at the receiving end this time.

However, Ian Bell and Strauss changed the scenario with a 170-run partnership for the third wicket that came from just 160 balls. Strauss hit his career-best 158 runs that came off just 145 deliveries. He hit 18 fours and a six while Bell managed to score 69 runs from 71 balls with four fours and a six.

At 281/2 in the 43rd over, England looked all set to register the highest run-chase in the World Cups but Zaheer Khan returned to remove both the batsmen off successive deliveries.

Paul Collingwood (1) and Matt Prior (4) failed to contribute with the bat and the match seemed to have slipped out of their hands. However, Graeme Swann (15*), Michael Yardy (13) and Tim Bresnan (14) hit a few lusty blows to bring England back into the game but fell just one run short of the target. The match ended in tie and both the teams shared the points. Strauss was declared the player of the match for his knock of 158 runs.
