This World Cup top five has a list of those whose batting was so bad that even the most ardent cricket supporters would have been put off. The list of five worst batting performances in World Cup cricket.

Sunil Gavaskar, 36* v England, 1975 World Cup: It was the first game of the first World Cup and India were chasing 335 for a win in 60 overs. They were expected to go down fighting, instead, Gavaskar batted through 60 overs, facing 174 balls in the progress and scored an unbeaten 36. India ended on 132/3, going down by 202 runs in the process. Nearly killed World Cup cricket with his batting>

India 17/5 against Zimbabwe, 1983 World Cup: It was another game India was going down in and to the first-timers Zimbabwe. Batting first, they lot half the side for 17 and it seemed like over-confidence after beating West Indies seemed to have done the trick. Kapil Dev later saved the day for the Indians but this was one of the worst performances by a top order.

India v Australia at Chennai, 1987 World Cup: India needed 67 to win the game, had 16 overs in hand with seven wickets standing. They had gone in as defending champions and were playing at home against a side which had been described by some of the former players as a first-class team. And yet, the rest of the Indian team collapsed for a mere addition of 65 runs to lose the game.

Pakistan v England, 1992 World Cup: Pakistan hadn’t had the best of the starts to the World Cup and against a much favoured English side, crashed to 74 all out. The batting was frivolous to say the least and would have made the coach tear his hair apart. Fortunately for the side, rain prevented any further play in the game and they were able to escape with one point that helped them qualify for the semi-final and later win the World Cup.

Pakistan v Australia, 1999 World Cup final: As far as finals in World Cup cricket go, this was by far the worst ever. And the reason for that was the awful batting performance by the Pakistani side batting first – getting out for 132. In reply, the Aussies made the runs in 20 overs and a bit and the game was done and dusted in less than 60 overs – the duration of just one innings in the 1975 World Cup final.
