India were going into this game without a single win – they had two very close games by single-digit runs to Australia and England and their game against Sri Lanka had been rained off. A loss here would have ended their hopes in the World Cup or at least required them to win four in a row after this.Intimidated by Kiran More>

Pakistan, on the other hand, had been crushed by ten wickets by West Indies, beaten Zimbabwe and had been shot out for 74 by England before this one. Another loss would have spelt doom for them as well.

India won the toss and elected to bat after two defeats batting second. They lost Krish Srikkanth early after he had managed only five off 39 balls but contributions from Ajay Jadeja (46), Mohammad Azharuddin (32) and Vinod Kambli (24) kept the Indians in hunt.

It was a blitzkrieg by Sachin Tendulkar (54) and Kapil Dev’s 26-ball 35 that helped the Indians get to 216/7 in the stipulated 49 overs.

In reply, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Zahid Fazal departed early for the Pakistanis, but Aamer Sohail and Javed Miandad were involved in a 88-run stand for the third wicket. At 105/2, the Pakistanis looked well in hunt but they had eaten away too many deliveries.

Then, Miandad got intimidated by the Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More and soon lost his concentration to get out for 40 off 110 balls and the rest of the side crumpled under the pressure of having to score the runs quickly. Such was the magnitude of the loss, that the Pakistanis have played India two more times in World Cup after this and have to win.

Tendulkar was named the man of the match for his sterling effort.
