The Highveld Lions won a one sided encounter against Guyana to go to the second spot in Group B of the Airtel Champions League T20. A brilliant bowling display from Ethan O’ Reilly helped the Lions to restrict the Guyanese batsman to just 148 in their 20 overs. Then a wonderful, unbeaten second wicket partnership of 133 between their captain Alviro Petersen and Richard Cameron helped the Lions to reach the target in just 15.1 overs. Well played again>

The win also put the Lions in prime contention for a place in the semi finals. The margin has helped them shore up their run rate as well. Knocked out>

O’ Reilly got two early wickets that put Guyana on the back foot immediately. Travis Dowlin’s poor run continued as he got out for seven in the second over. A lack of a good start has been one of Guyana’s problems and it happened again. This has increased the pressure on Ramnaresh Sarwan and he gain did not hang in for long. He went out in the fourth over after getting a good start.

The lack of partnerships once again contributed to the low total. Fall of regular wickets stopped the run flow. Only a late flourish from Lennox Cush, 19 off 10 balls, helped Guyana to their total.

Guyana started their bowling well picking up the wicket of Jonathan Vandiar. This brought Cameron to the crease, who initially watched Petersen getting off to a great start. But then he exploded after the seventh over.

It became clear after the tenth over that the Lions were trying to finish off things as soon as possible. The Guyana bowling was as dismal as it can be and was suitably punished by both Petersen and Cameron.

The fielding too was poor as it was against the Mumbai Indians. Both batsmen were given chances, with Cameron dropped in the boundary and Petersen dropped by the keeper. The group looks to be evenly poised now with the Lions match against the Royal Challengers becoming a virtual quarter final. The Challengers have a better run rate than the Lions and if they win their game against the Indians will become prime contenders. The Lions, either way have to beat the Challengers to make sure that they reach the semis.

For Guyana, it has been a disappointing tournament so far and they play their final game against the South Australia Redbacks, who have looked strong so far.
