The Warriors taught the Victorian Bushrangers a good lesson on Monday as they beat them by 28 runs. This was Warriors’ second win in as many games and they are now clear leaders at the top of the points table in their group.
The star of the show had to be the Warriors captain Davey Jacobs. In fact, Jacobs was the difference between the two teams. He batted superbly, took, what was described as a ‘rippaa’ of a catch by the commentators and captained the team beautifully to guide the Warriors to what turned out to be an easy win in the end.>
Warriors batted first after winning the toss and were off to a flier thanks to the Warriors skipper. After the first ball had been flicked away to the fine-leg boundary for four, Jacobs took 17 off the first over from Dirk Nannes, and the carnage continued for the next five Powerplay overs. 62 came off the those six, with Ashwell Prince – Jacobs’ partner – scoring only 11. >
In the end, it took a misunderstanding between the two openers, to end the captain’s innings through a run-out (59 off 39), but by then, the pair had added 81 for the first wicket. Prince, who was at fault for the run-out, lasted another two runs before being sent back and barring a 31 from Mark Boucher, none of the other Warriors batsmen could live up to the start. Warriors collapsed to 158/6 in the end, after it had looked like they could get to more than 180 at one stage.
In reply, Victoria begun badly as only 12 runs came off the first 14 balls, before the 15th delivery saw Rob Quiney get caught out at the boundary off Makhaya Ntini. Brad Hodge is one of the most experienced batsmen in the Victorian side. But after he had got off to a start and scored 16, he was brilliantly caught by a flying Jacobs at mid-on. And once Aaron Finch and David Hussey departed, the chase looked like it would go nowhere.
The rest of the team collapsed from 94/3 to 105/9, before some lusty hitting at the end took them to a more respectable 130 as the innings ended.
The Warriors now have two wins from two games and will take on Bangalore and Guyana in their last two matches.
