Warriors made a winning start to their Champions League T20 campaign when they overcame the Wayamba side from Sri Lanka at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. The Warriors won by seven wickets and with ten balls to spare.
Wayamba chose to bat after winning the toss, and were soon in trouble. Juan Theron got rid of Mahela Jayawardene off the very second ball of the game, and followed it up with the wicket of another international Mahela Udawatte. Wayamba were 2/2 and in big trouble at that stage. >
Captain Jehan Mubarak joined Jeevan Kulatunga at the crease, but was a mere spectator, as the latter decided to counter-attack. 48 runs were added for the third wicket, out of which the skipper scored only nine, while Kulatunga went about tonking the bowling around.
Mubarak then tried to break the shackles by hitting the ball over, but only managed to spoon Nicky Boje to the long-off. However, it was the fourth wicket stand between Kulatunga and Kushal Perera which rescued the team from the precarious position that they had found themselves in. The pair added 60 for the fourth wicket in less than six overs and it looked like 170 could be achieved by the Wayamba team. >
Unfortunately for them, Kulatunga tried to repeat the strokes that had getting him runs, but only managed to catch a Lonwobo Tsotsobe delivery at the toe of the bat. He was a goner for 59 (44), and despite Perera’s 39, the side managed to add only 43 off the last six overs. Wayamba ended on 153 in the 20 overs.
In reply, both, captain Davey Jacobs and Ashwell Prince tried to get the team off to a flier. Prince was bowled off a Chanaka Welegedara yorker, but Jacobs and Colin Ingram got the score on 69 in the eighth over. The good part about the partnership was that they never got bogged down, probably in the fear that the Lankan spinners would cause mayhem later, if they did.
In the end, despite the loss of two more wickets, Warriors wicket-keeper, Mark Boucher came in at the end to smack a 26-ball 40. This was enough to get the Warriors a win, as the Wayamba quick bowlers failed to get a move on.
Theron’s fine opening burst won him the man of the match award.
