Greg Chappell has been appointed Australia’s first full-time selector and will join the panel consisting of Andrew Hilditch, David Boon, Merv Hughes and Jamie Cox. Chappell said that he will not drop someone for the sake of doing so, but would not hesitate to take any tough decisions if required. Appointed selector of team>

Chappell has earlier been the selector of the Australian side in the late 1980s, before terminating his contract and joining the media as a TV commentator. He said that the really tough decisions will be taken by the head of the selectors, Hilditch, but hoped that there was unanimity in the decisions.

It is also said that the selection committee will be revamped to accommodate Chappell. One of the existing four will need to make way for him and with Hilditch’s contract expected to run till the World Cup in 2011, one of the other three – Boon, Hughes and Cox – will be given the axe.

Australia has been struggling with their Test side in recent times, as they lost their number one ranking in the world. Currently, they are perched at the number four position, and there is a good chance that some of the players may be struggling to retain their places. A bad Ashes series could quicken that process given that Chappell comes from being a part of the Centre of Excellence.
