Mohammad Irfan could become the first Pakistani cricketer to be signed up for the fourth edition of the IPL to be played in 2011. Irfan has got into an agreement with the Kolkata Knight Riders, though it is subject to an approval from the BCCI. >
28-year old Irfan is a left-arm pace bowler, who stands at a height of seven feet. This makes him one of the tallest bowlers in the world. He was recommended to the Kolkata Knight Riders by Wasim Akram. Akram is KKR’s bowling consultant.
Since Irfan has yet to play international cricket, he can be signed up by any franchise without being included in the auction.
Irfan spoke to one of the newspaper and said that he had signed up for the Kolkata side. He also added that Akram had recommended him to the side, and was called upon to play in three games in Sri Lanka, and on seeing his performance in the games, the management was impressed.
However, it is said that the contract is yet to be signed, it is only an MoU that has been signed. This is because approval will need to be taken from the BCCI for signing up a Pakistani player, given the worsening of ties between the two countries over the last two years.
In the 2010 edition of the IPL, none of the Pakistani cricketers were signed up in the auction despite being cleared by the Pakistani government.
