Stuart Broad could be awarded a one-match ban or could lose a part of his match fee in the second Test match between England and Pakistan after the match-referee Ranjan Madugalle charged him with throwing the ball “inappropriately” at Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider. >
At one stage, it looked like the English side would be able to finish off the game with an innings win, but the Pakistani lower-order defied the English bowlers for a long time, causing frustration.
The incident happened during a seventh-wicket partnership, between Haider and Mohammad Aamer. Haider made 88 while Aamer had scored 16, and off one of the deliveries, Broad stopped a drive from the batsman while bowling and threw the ball back at the batsman. The ball hit the batsman on the side. Broad was half-hearted in raising his hand, before walking off to his bowling mark again.
The Pakistani captain Salman Butt expressed his displeasure at the incident and said that the sport was a gentleman’s sport. He also added that he understood that the English batsmen got frustrated at the way the Pakistani tail performed. However, he also said that throwing balls back at the batsman and not apologising properly was not the right way of going about the things.
However, English bowler, Graeme Swann, said that while the English fielders had got frustrated, Broad had intended no malice in the incident. He also added that Broad had apologised immediately after the incident.
Broad has often been accused of behaving petulantly on the field, but hasn’t been charged too often. Broad’s father, Chris, is also an ICC match referee.
