New Zealand’s wicket-keeper and aggressive batsman, Brendon McCullum has said that he will look to open the Kiwi innings in Test matches. McCullum had given his gloves away in the Test match version of the game to concentrate on his batting and overcome the fitness issues that he looked to have developed. >
McCullum said that if he were to start opening the innings, he would not be one of those conventional opening bats. He said that he will look to be aggressive from the very start.
McCullum has had batsmen like Virender Sehwag, Matthew Hayden, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chris Gayle and Tamim Iqbal to take inspiration from. These batsmen have almost made opening in Test match cricket as aggressive as the ODIs, and excelled in that. McCullum is not one of the typically consistent batsmen at the start of the innings, but his high strike-rates make him one of the more dreaded batsmen to bowl to in the shorter format.
New Zealand has tried more than a dozen different batsmen as openers since 2005 but have not had much success. McCullum said that if the current opening batsmen do a decent job, he will not have a problem in batting at the number three position either.
He said, “One, two or three are probably the same. I don’t mind where. It won’t be the stock-standard blunt the ball at the top of the order. I’ve got to stick to my strengths and if we’re totally honest it probably hasn’t worked in the past, the way we’ve been playing. Why not try something different?”
