The Sri Lankan side for the Asia Cup has been announced and it is making news for the players which have not been selected than who have been selected. Sanath Jayasuriya, the 40-year old opener is out of the squad, and so is Ajantha Mendis. >
Sri Lanka’s new selection panel, headed by Aravinda de Silva have taken this hard call of pushing Jayasuriya out after his abysmal performances in the games leading up to the Asia Cup. Mendis’ case is rather queer, given that he had had a good tri-series in Zimbabwe, and looked to be regaining some of his form as well.
Jayasuriya’s travails with the bat have been well known as he had not only struggled in the World T20 but also in the IPL.
On the other hand, Rangana Herath was selected ahead of Mendis. He is the third spinner behind Muralitharan and Suraj Randiv in the squad.
Kumar Sangakkara gets handed over the reigns of the team from Dilshan who was the captain in the tri-series in Zimbabwe.
The Squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Muttiah Muralitharan (vc), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Farveez Maharoof, Chamara Kapugedara, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedara, Lasith Malinga, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Thilina Kandamby.
