Michael Clarke has now done a volte-face and said that he would like to continue as the captain of the T20I format of the game for Australia. Earlier, Clarke had said that he knew that his place in the T20 side was in jeopardy as a batsman, after he had struggled to get the runs and had had a strike-rate of around 80 in the tournament. Ricky Ponting had supported Clarke’s captaincy and had said that he was the best option to lead the side in the shortest format of the game. Even Shane Warne had pulled his weight behind the captain and said that he was the best number three that the Aussie side could have.

Clarke said that it could just be a question of requiring that kind of luck to succeed at this level. He added, “Everybody has a different role in our team though and that is one thing that players certainly are aware of, and you need to do your role to the best of your ability.”

The Aussie selectors will now need to decide on Clarke’s role in the future, given that the Aussies now go to England for a short tour that consists of five ODIs against England and a couple of T20Is against Pakistan.

When asked whether he would like to continue as the captain of the side, Clarke said, “No doubt. I’m disappointed we couldn’t win the World T20, win the final, but I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity,”
