South Africa beat West Indies in the first T20I game played at the North Sound in Antigua by 13 runs. Ryan McLaren was the wrecker-in-chief when he scalped a five wicket haul, while Jacques Kallis continued his batting form with a half century to his name. >
Batting first, the South Africans lost Loots Bosman early, but Kallis and Graeme Smith got together well to add 73 for the second wicket. Both were not particularly quick, but the track did not allow such liberties, as was evidenced later. Smith scored 37 before walking off, stumped, but the replays clearly showed that his foot was inside when the bails were removed. >
Kallis then completed his half century and took the score on to 111/2 in the 16th over, and it did look like the side would be able to get to 150 plus in the 20 overs. Instead, the middle-order got stuck and barely got going as they fell apart at the seams to a 136/7 in the 20 overs.
In reply, Chris Gayle began well with a couple of boundaries, but Andre Fletcher was dismissed for a duck and then the captain himself smacked the ball straight to the long-on to be reduced to 28/2 in five overs.
Dwayne Bravo and Ramnarsh Sarwan resurrected the innings a little, but once Bravo departed for 20, it was all over for the hosts. Kieron Pollard made a concerted effort in the end with a 27, while Dale Steyn assisted the side with a rather long, 11-ball over, but the side capitulated to 123 all out with a ball to spare.
McLaren took two wickets at the start, and three in the end to finish with 5/19 in his four.
