Hussey takes Australia to World T20 final

It was a game that Pakistan couldn’t have lost, shouldn’t have lost.

It was a game that Pakistan couldn’t have lost, shouldn’t have lost. But in the end, a stunning effort from Michael Hussey saw the Aussies overcome the Pakistani side off the penultimate ball of the game to enter the final of the ICC World T20. What a stunning innings!>

The Pakistanis were put into bat by Michael Clarke on a track that was supposed to help the seam bowlers due to the delayed start due to rain. Instead, the batting got off to a good start as none of the openers seemed too worried about the Aussie bowling. A fifty in vain>

Runs came thick and fast, as Kamran Akmal got to his fifty off 33 balls, before getting dismissed by Mitchell Johnson. The pair had added 82 for the first wicket and it had come off only 9.4 overs. Salman Butt departed soon after, but Umar Akmal then took over to propel the score even further.

Akmal, in the company of his captain, hardly put a foot wrong and emulated his brother Kamran by getting to a half century. His 56 came off 35 balls and he remained unbeaten till the very end as his side got to 191/6 in the 20 overs.

The target of 192 was one of the highest that one would need to chase in international T20 cricket, but most importantly, it was the second-highest score of the tournament. with Dave Warner getting dismissed early, in the first over itself, the target got even stiffer.

The Aussies kept going for the runs, and while their run-rate remained good in the first six overs, they also lost a couple of wickets in the process. Brad Haddin then blasted a quickfire 25, but after the six-over mark, the spinners made scoring difficult. 53 runs had come off the first six overs, but off the next four, Australia only scored 14 runs and lost a couple of wickets to slump to 67/4 in ten overs.

This meant that they were deep in trouble, but were rescued by Cameron White’s big six-hitting spree. White smacked Afridi for a couple of maximums, and this was followed by one each off Mohammad Hafeez and Abdur Rahman. Dave Hussey also joined in the act with one over the fence, but despite all of this, the Aussies needed 85 off the last seven overs when Hussey got out.

It was here that Michael Hussey took over, and smacked Afridi for another couple of sixes in the 16th over. Australia did lose White and Steven Smith in quick succession, and with 48 needed off 17 deliveries, the match seemed to have slipped away.

Not quite, as Hussey was not done yet. He took 14 runs off the 18th over, and despite getting only 8 off five, smacked a six off the last ball of the 19th over to 18 required off the last ball. Hussey smacked a six, six four and a six to clinch the game for the side and took them to the finals.

Hussey’s 24-ball 60 won him the man of the match award, and Australia now meet traditional rivals, England in the finals.
