South Africa batted first after winning the toss and were given a rousing start by their new opening pair of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis, after having replaced Loots Bosman with Herschelle Gibbs. Smith departed with the score reading 40 and the introduction of spin slowed the run-rate down and sent back Kallis to leave the side at 55/2 in the eighth over.

Gibbs was then joined by AB de Villiers, and the pair added 42 runs for the third wicket in almost six overs. Gibbs looked to be regaining his form, before the McCullum brothers combined to dismiss him. At this stage, the South Africans were 97/3 and with 39 balls remaining. Sole batsman to score a 30+>

Albie Morkel was sent up the order, promoted for his hard-hitting abilities over JP Duminy, he did not let his captain down. In reply, the Kiwis lost Brendon McCullum in the very first over, and despite having a second wicket stand of 44, Martin Guptill barely looked comfortable in his innings of 18. The problem that the Kiwis faced was that the asking rate was mounting from the very beginning, but apart from Jesse Ryder (33), none of the others could convert their starts.

Guptill, Taylor, Styris and Hopkins, all scored 18, 19, 13 and 18 and an while Nathan McCullum smashed the ball around for 26, the chase was never going to successful without too much help from the top-order.
