New Zealand confirmed their place in the Super Eights by beating Zimbabwe in the ninth game of the ICC World T20 in a rain-shortened game at Guyana. >
The Zimbabwean side were put into bat by New Zealand, and were looking good through their opening partnership of 36 between Tatenda Taibu and Hamilton Masakadza. The pair took only 4.4 overs to score those many before Tim Southee sent back Taibu.
Even after that early loss, the side looked like they were on top when Masakadza and Andy Blignaut – taken in today’s game – added 22, to get the side to 58 in the 7th over for the loss of one wicket. At this stage, the Zimbabwe side looked like dominating the proceedings, but from this position, they collapsed.
The last nine wickets fell for 26 runs, as the side was all out for 84.
Nathan McCullum scalped 3/16 off his four, while Scot Styris also bagged three.
In reply, the Kiwis lost Jesse Ryder early, but got to 36/1 after 8 overs before the rain prevented any further play. At this stage, the side needed to be at 30/1 and hence won the game by six runs to enter the Super Eights.
McCullum won the man of the match award for his fine spell of bowling.
