Shane Watson smashed a 49-ball 81 and David Hussey’s half century had four sixes in over as the Aussies beat Pakistan in the sixth game of the ICC World 20 by 34 runs to win their first game of the competition. >
Batting first, Australia were off to a usual fiery start, when the openers smacked a half century stand for the first wicket. 51 came off 33 balls before Dave Warner departed and when Michael Clarke was also claimed by Mohammad Hafeez, the side looked to be throttling against the slow bowlers; 64/2 in the eighth over. >
At this stage, it was David Hussey’s entry that changed things around for the Australian side. Watson was batting well at the other end, and he took first charge and smashed the ball around in a show of intent, and after that, even Hussey joined in the fun.
Watson got to 80, but Hussey had only 26 off 22 balls, with Aussies at 134/2 in 15 overs. It was in the 16th over, the younger of the Hussey brothers took on Mohammad Sami and smacked the first, third, fourth and fifth ball of the 16 over for sixes and brought up his half century.
Saeed Ajmal then accounted for both the batsmen in the next over, and a record five wickets fell in the last over of the Australian innings – including two run-outs – but they had got to 191 in their twenty overs by then.
In reply, the Pakistani start was slow after Kamran Akmal was sent back for a duck. Dirk Nannes did leak a few runs, but with Salman Butt and Hafeez falling within the first six overs, the side was struggling at 49/3 in the six overs.
Umar Akmal has been touted as a very talented batsman, but he was sent packing by Steven Smith, and at 70/4 the match looked like it was going to be a one-sided rout.
It was at this stage, that Afridi brought some respectability to the proceedings in the partnership with Misbah ul Haq, in the process hitting 17 runs off a Smith over. Unfortunately, Misbah did not get the ball off the park too many times, and the mounting asking rate and some good, fast bowling saw the Pakistanis capitulate once Afridi was bowled by Shaun Tait.
The rest of the batsmen just fell away without chipping in too much and the side was bowled out for 157 in the 20 overs.
Shane Watson won the man of the match award.
