The third place play-off was a new addition to this year’s IPL and the match will be played between the previous year’s finalists; the Deccan Chargers and the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. This is the same ground on which both the semi-finals were played and the final will also be featured here. 
The Deccan Chargers were beaten by the Chennai Super Kings, but in the hindsight would think that they should have made a better fist at chasing the total in the semi-final. After all, it was only a matter of 140 odd runs that the side needed to chase and they fell well short of it!
On the other hand, Bangalore gave away too many runs they would think in the last five overs. that made the target swell up to proportions that was difficult to get and that also allowed the Mumbai Indians to bowl much better at them.
Both the sides now will understand that they have to lift their batting (Deccan) and bowling (Bangalore) to make a match out of the third place play-off. 
For the Chargers, it the lack of runs for Adam Gilchrist, and some woeful strokeless play from Herschelle Gibbs that is the cause for tension. With the Chennai spinners having already exposed the lack of batting against them on a wearing pitch, the Bangalore side will look to repeat the same formula and in all probabilities, even get in a second spinner in Appanna or Roelof van der Merwe to bowl at them.
However, the one thing that the Deccan side could be looking at doing is to change the batting order around a little. They could look at getting another batsman at the top of the order who could probably look to play the spinners much better than what they have so far. This could also mean that the all-rounder in Dwayne Smith may get a chance in this game and he will look to exploit the conditions at the top of the order.
According to me, the Royal Challengers Bangalore will go into the match as favourites, but marginal ones at that. The reason for it is that the team batting first could have a huge advantage and also because the Bangalore side could struggle on the spinning front. Stan James offers 4/5 for a Bangalore win, as compared to 6/5 (Totesports) if Deccan come third and qualify for the Champions League T20 as well.
