The Border-Gavaskar Trophy> is a Test cricket series match which is mostly played between two teams, namely, India and Australia. This tournament has experienced competitive test series which have been played in the recent years too and has resulted into a narrow victory for one of the sides or with a draw. At present, the tournament is being played through the tours program of the International Cricket Council. Moreover, if a series is drawn, the country team holding this trophy retains the trophy.
This trophy is named after the Australian cricketer, Allan Border and the Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar. Both this legends scored more than 10,000 test runs in their respective career and even captained their teams. Other than that, the first trophy series was played in the 1996-97 season, which the Indian team won by 1-0. Since then, this trophy has been swapped between these two teams. With Australia team losing the match in India, Steve Waugh thought it better to dub the Indian tour as the final frontier for the team. And by 2004-05, the team defeated the Indian team by 2-1 in India.
Usually the captain of the team was Ricky Ponting, who did not play in the matches due to an injury. So, instead Adam Gilchrist captained the winning side of the team. In 2007-08, the trophy was played in Australia. In this session, the Australia team retained the trophy and won the first two test matches in Melbourne and Sydney against India. Australia won one match as part of the four test series.
In 2008-09 session, India defeated Australia by 2-0 in the four match series which was held in India in order to retain the trophy. This series was accompanied by other tournaments too like the One day internationals, which was not considered at all as a part of the trophy. The competition of the series of this trophy was Australia with a victory of 10 match and India with 1o too. Other than that, both the teams had draws of 6 matches.
Some of the records and statistics show that Sachin Tendulkar became the leading scorer in test cricket in 2008-09 and also the first player to score 12,000 test runs in the same year. Harbhajan Singh on the other hand, took the lead of being the first Indian to take a test match with hat trick in 2000-01. Dravid and Laxman took a record of 376 run of fifth wicket partnership in Kolkata in the same year.
