The 54th game of the IPL will see Chennai Super Kings needing to win their game against the Kings XI Punjab. The Punjab team is already out of the competition, but the Chennai side is still in it, and if they are able to beat Kings XI Punjab, it could boil down to the net run rate.
Of course, a lot will depend on the results of the two games that will be played before this one; Mumbai playing Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals taking on Kolkata Knight Riders. If Mumbai and Kolkata win, then Chennai’s win will take them through to the next round. However, if Bangalore wins, and so does Rajasthan, it could get a tad difficult for the Super Kings, even if they go on to win. If the Super Kings lose the game, they can kiss their chances a goodbye. >
Chennai will need Mathew Hayden or MS Dhoni to fire. Preferably both! The batting has felt the pressure thanks to the lack of form from both the players, and if the side needs to win this game, they will need to go after the bowling from the word go. Luckily the ground at the Dharamshala is not as difficult to score off as it has been in Chennai and so the batsmen could look to make the most out of the situation.
Chennai’s other worry will suddenly be their bowling. So far, in the last few games, the bowling was taken care of by Shadab Jakati and R Ashwin, but those were totally different tracks. Now, on a wicket where the quick bowlers will get much more assistance than the slower ones, Doug Bollinger will need some support at the other. Else, the likes of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara could feel the heat. >
Punjab have already crashed out of the tournament and are there in it only for pride. However, they would also not want to end the tournament at the bottom of the pile if they can win this one, and Kolkata loses both their games, there is a good chance that Punjab will end at the penultimate position.
Chennai are hands down favourites to win this one according to the bookies, but will need to get their bowling in place, even as Bwin offers 13/18 for their win as compared to 11/8 (Sky Bet) for Punjab to end on a high.
