The English county cricket club, Surrey is into talks to rope in veteran player Brian Lara who has retired from international cricket since the 2007 World Cup. The club is trying to sign in the player for the Twenty20 tournament this season.
A spokesperson for the Surrey club spoke to BBC about the matter, “We have been in discussion with Brian regarding his possible involvement with the club. However we have no further comment to make at this stage.” Lara has not been actively involved in playing cricket since two years now and will need quite a good deal of practice to return to the field. However, Lara is not unknown to fame having knocked out 400 runs against England in 2004 which is the highest score by any batsman in test cricket.
The legendary player has numerous records to his name, some of which have now been surpassed by others in the field. Previously Lara tallied a total of 11,953 runs in test matches which was outdone by Sachin Tendulkar. Currently the rules of the tournament state that a county can enlist a maximum of four overseas players for the entire season. Amongst the four players, only two can feature in a single match. The Surrey team has already got Australian all-rounder, Andrew Symonds as well as Indian spinster, Piyush Chawla. If this deal clicks for Surrey, the team would enter as a strong contender at this season’s Twenty20.
