The time is running out for the Deccan Chargers as they take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bangalore in the 40th game of the Indian Premier League. The side has only three wins to their name so far, and that means at six points, they are the penultimate position in the points table. On the other hand, Bangalore has also lost its momentum by losing some successive games, but look relatively safe, as they need to win only two more games in the competition to make it through to the semi-finals. >
The Royal Challengers Bangalore had their strategy displaced in the last game against Delhi when they decided to bf up their batting line-up in place of the bowling. So out went Dale Steyn and in came Ross Taylor, whereas Cameron White retained his place at the top of the order. >
Unfortunately, the strategy had not worked in the game, and one feels that the Bangalore side may want to go in with Steyn, especially on the Bangalore track which assists the faster bowlers, whilst dropping out White. White has struggled through most part of this tournament without contributing much and that is the reason why he could be shown the door.
On the other hand, the Chargers could be looking at a major revamp. They had tried out Dwayne Smith in the previous game in place of Herschelle Gibbs, but the strategy did not work as Smith did not perform with either the bat or the ball. Whether he gets another chance would be the management’s call, but to me, it does look like Gibbs should be called back for such a crucial tie, and almost play in all the games.
The bowling for the Chargers looks a bit undercooked and that is where they will need to put their focus on, in trying to get the opposition total reduced. With a battery of big hitters in Bangalore, the captain and the coach will need to come out with a strategy that would assist the bowling in reducing the runs to the bare minimum; but the manner in which even the guys like Ryan Harris are being hit around, it may just be the time to call back Chaminda Vaas.
Bangalore are obvious favourites, and if they can avoid the complacency, they should help the bettors win the money at 4/6 (888Sport) as compared to Totesports’ 7/5.
