The Kolkata Knight Riders won their fifth game of the tournament by overcoming a resurgent Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens by 14 runs.
Batting first after winning the toss, the Kolkata Knight Riders were off to an excellent start when their opening pair of Chris Gayle and Sourav Ganguly seemed to be continuing from where they had left off as they smacked 94 runs for the first wicket.
Rather surprisingly, it was Ganguly who was the aggressor, whereas Gayle was more content to rotate the strike. After getting his eye in, Gayle smacked a couple of boundaries and a six, but was bowled by Rajat Bhatis for 40.
Ten runs alter at 104, Ganguly who had just completed his fifty also fell in much like the same manner as Gayle to Daniel Vettori, and when Brendon McCullum was run-out for six, the Knight Riders were 111/3 with seven overs to be played. >
It was here that the pair of Manoj Tiwary and Angelo Mathews turned things around for the side as they added 70 runs in the last seven overs, thanks mainly to Mathews’ 28-ball 46. He hit a couple of sixes and smote three fours in his knock that almost took the game away from the Daredevils. >
In reply, the Delhi side, chasing 182 for a win, needed a quick start from their openers to get going. Instead, Dave Warner survived all of five deliveries before he was bowled by Ashok Dinda off a delivery that did not rise too much.
However, that did not deter the Delhi side, which kept coming hard at the opposition through Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir; both of whom who added 99 for the second wicket in double quick time. Sehwag scored a half century whereas Gambhir looked good to be getting to his when he was on 47 off 29 deliveries when he was run-out by an inspired fielding effort by Ganguly.
That was the turning point of the game, as the rest of the batsmen failed to get going on a pitch that had begun to keep slow and low. Paul Collingwood scored two, and when Sehwag was out, the Daredevils needed 48 runs off 31 balls, but were struggling with their new guys at the crease.
Dinesh Karthik gave the side some hope with his lusty hitting, but in the end, Ajantha Mendis’ bowling was the difference as the side went on to win by 14 runs.
With this win, the Kolkata Knight Riders have leapt back into contention with ten points.
