Delhi Daredevils took another step towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the third edition of the IPL by beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 37 runs in the 35th match of the tournament. >
The Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry Feroz Shah Kotla wicket in Delhi. The opening pair of Dave Warner and Virender Sehwag gave Delhi an excellent start with a 41 run stand that came off only four overs. Sehwag was in such a belligerent mood that he scored 35 out of those runs off only 22 balls, and looked to have regained his touch when he inside-edged one from Abhimanyu Mithun onto the stumps.
Gautam Gambhir fell soon after this, for only a single, when he was run-out, and despite a 31 run stand between Warner and Paul Collingwood, at 83/3 in the tenth over, the Daredevils looked to be in a minor strife. This problem was accentuated when Dinesh Karthik, hero of the previous game, fell to Appanna, and the side was reduced to 90/4. >
Collingwood then took over and smashed the Bangalore bowling to pulp with seven sixes in his innings. Cameron White bowled one over and was dispatched by Collingwood for two sixes, and then followed it up with a six in each of his 17th, 18th and the 19th over as the side propelled to 184/5 in the 20 overs. Collingwood ended unbeaten on 75 that came off 46 balls.
In reply, the Bangalore side needed a quick start to go after the target. Instead, both, Jacques Kallis and the new opener Cameron White failed to get a kick on, and even by the time, the number three batsman, Kevin Pietersen was dismissed, the side was 52/2 in the tenth over.
Scoring 130 runs off the last ten overs was always going to be difficult, but Kallis got to his fifty and Ross Taylor went for the jugular right from the word go. Taylor spanked three sixes in his short ten ball cameo, but when on 22, he tried to sweep the medium pace of Rajat Bhatia away and was caught plumb in front of the wicket.
With Taylor’s dismissal, the Bangalore chances also plummeted, and in the end, the Bangalore side ended on 147/9 in the 20 overs. Pradeep Sangwan and Amit Mishra, both, grabbed three wickets.
With this win, Delhi is now on 12 points off nine games, whereas Bangalore is on ten points.
