The Royal Challengers Bangalore were propelled to a total of 171/5 in the 20 overs thanks to a stunning 38-ball 68 by Uthappa and some vital contributions throughout the innings. Batting first after being inserted by their opposition, the Royal Challengers tried their best to cut loose through their man in form, Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey. However, they could only manage 28 by the fifth over when Kallis lost his wicket for the first time in the tournament. Facing up to L Balaji, he walked too far across and was bowled. What a spell of bowling to break momentum>

Rahul Dravid was promoted up the order, but apart from three good looking boundaries, he looked a tad at sea and was bowled by Muthiah Muralitharan, who then also sucked Pandey into smacking the ball into the air and into the safe hands of Suresh Raina.

This brought the pair of Virat Kohli and Robin Uthappa to the crease and there began the resurrection for the Bangalore side. Both were a tad circumspect to begin with, but once they got set in, the runs began to flow. Uthappa was dropped a couple of times to start off with on 5 and 25, and the pair added 47 runs for the 4th wicket.

With the score reading 110, Kohli’s stumping was missed by Parthiv Patel, but he recovered quickly and stumped him two balls later. At this stage, there were 26 balls remaining and a total of 150 would have looked good. Instead, Uthappa went on a rampage and shocked the Chennai bowlers with a six in each of the next two overs, and three in succession off the bowling of Balaji. 24 came off that penultimate over from Balaji and then Ashwin conceded 17 off the last as Bangalore got to much more than they would have imagined they would!

Chasing 172 for the win, the Super Kings needed Mathew Hayden to fire all cylinders, with some valuable support from the other end. As it turned out, Parthiv Patel was dismissed quite early, and the new-comer George Bailey struggled through his innings, much like a baptism by fire. That came in the form of an unusually miserly Anil Kumble who conceded only 15 runs on his four overs, tying both the batsmen to knots.

Rather surprisingly, Hayden failed to kick from his 32, which he had scored off 28 balls, and Bailey was dismissed in the same over by Vinay Kumar to send the Super Kings to 59/3 in the tenth over. Much was expected out of Suresh Raina, the captain, but he lasted all of seven balls, while Murali Vijay failed to trouble the scorers too much.

In the end, S Badrinath entertained for a while with his 17-ball 31, but the chase kept becoming exponentially difficult for the Chennai side and they crashed to a 36-run loss to the Royal Challengers.

Vinay Kumar ended with a four wicket haul, and the Bangalore team went to the top of the points table with 8 points. Chennai now have four points from five games.
