The Aussies had declared on their first innings score of 459/5 while batting first thanks to a comeback century by Michael Clarke and an unbeaten 112 from Marcus North. In reply, Doug Bollinger captured five wickets in as the Kiwis capitulated to 157 all out in the first innings.Fighting century goes in vain>

Asked to follow on, the Kiwis had a better start this time around with the openers adding 70 for the first wicket. However, a middle-order collapse saw them stutter to 183/5 before Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori resurrected the innings with a 126 run partnership for the sixth wicket. Vettori scored a 77 and McCullum was dismissed on the fifth morning for a century.

Daryl Tuffey also scored an unbeaten 47, but the rest of the tail failed to wag, as the Kiwis were blown apart for 407.

This meant that the Aussies needed 106 to win the game, and they did it with absolute ease. Phil Hughes smacked a 75-ball 86, whereas Katich remained unbeaten on 18 to win the game by ten wickets for the Aussie side.

Michael Clarke’s century won him the man of the match award.
