Tendulkar assault leads Mumbai to win over KKR

The Kolkata Knight Riders decided to bat first given that it was a good pitch to bat on and they thought that they would love to make it difficult for the home team later.

The Kolkata Knight Riders decided to bat first given that it was a good pitch to bat on and they thought that they would love to make it difficult for the home team later. What an innings by the little master>

Chris Gayle, who was playing his first game of the IPL this time, got off to a flier with a four off the first ball, but then failed to score too many off the ones that followed. Sourav Ganguly, at the other end, had opened the innings with Gayle, and looked to be in a better touch than he was the other night against the Rajasthan side. He started with three boundaries off Ryan McLaren, as it looked lie the Kolkata side was looking at a 180 plus total. Well played on comeback, but in vain>

However, the Mumbai Indians seemed to have come out with a strategy to bowl as many yorkers as possible to the two, interspersed with the slower balls. Dwayne Bravo conceded only seven off his first over bowling yorkers, whereas Malinga gave away only ten off his two – bowling as many slower ones as he could muster!

The Knight Riders did not lose a wicket in the Powerplay, but scored only 41. Harbhajan was brought in immediately after the six overs were up and he bowled his four overs on the trot and in the process picked up the wicket of Ganguly as well; fooled by a slower ball, flighted by Bhajji.

At the other end, Gayle continued to score the runs off singles and twos, and at one stage, the Knight Riders were 70/1 in 11 overs, 74/1 in 12 and 80/1 in 13!

It was only when Bravo came back that both Gayle and Owais Shah hit a four each, after which Zaheer went for 16 in the 16th; Gayle 15 of them. In the process, Gayle also brought up his fifty, and went on to score 75, but in the end was dismissed by Zaheer off the last ball of the innings. With the big overs coming towards the end, Kolkata ended their innings on 155/3 in 20 overs. Given that they had lost only three wickets, they would have thought that they could get to at least 170-180!

The Mumbai reply was typically based on the some crisp batting by Sachin Tendulkar. The maestro looks to be in the form of his life and he just showed how! 12 came off Ishant Sharma’s first over, and another 14 off his next, whereas, despite the early wicket of Shikhar Dhawan, the Mumbai Indians got to 61 at the end of the seventh over.

The one chance that the Kolkata side had was a chance that Tendulkar offered off the bowling of Kartik, but he dropped him and then there was no looking back. In the company of Saurabh Tiwary, Tendulkar milked the bowling around, and Tiwari would hit that required boundary whenever the run-rate fell behind. There was a time when 76 runs were needed off nine overs and it did look like the visitors were getting back into the match. However, Angelo Mathews was hit for 12 runs in the 12th over, while Gayle went for three boundaries and the Mumbai Indians were well and truly away.

Tiwary and Pollard got out one after the other, but Tendulkar and Rajgopal Satish saw the side through to a convincing win with nine balls and seven wickets to spare. Tendulkar won the man of the match award, and with the win the Mumbai side went to the top of the table.
